Supporting LGBTQIA+ Survivors of Domestic and Sexual Violence
June is Pride Month—a time to celebrate the resilience, diversity, and strength of the LGBTQIA+ community. At Safe + Sound Somerset, we also see it as a vital opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to supporting all survivors of domestic and sexual violence, especially those whose identities make them more vulnerable to harm and systemic oppression.
The Link Between Identity and Violence
LGBTQIA+ individuals experience domestic and sexual violence at rates equal to or higher than their heterosexual and cisgender peers.
These are not just numbers—they represent real people whose experiences are often overlooked or misunderstood. Systemic issues like homophobia, transphobia, and racism create significant barriers to safety, support, and healing.
What Safety Really Means
Safe + Sound Somerset uses the Choices, Boundaries, and Consent (CBC) framework to understand both personal and systemic violence., defining safety as:
– Having the freedom to make your own choices without fear or threats
– Being able to set and maintain personal boundaries
– Having your consent respected in all areas of life
When LGBTQIA+ individuals are denied these rights—through discriminatory laws, family rejection, or unsafe institutions—it creates an environment where violence can flourish.
Why Pride Month Is More Than a Celebration
Recognizing Pride Month is not just symbolic—it’s a call to action. For organizations like ours, it means:
– Affirming LGBTQIA+ identities in every aspect of our services
– Removing barriers that prevent LGBTQIA+ survivors from accessing support, such as fear of discrimination or lack of culturally competent care
– Creating inclusive, trauma-informed spaces where all survivors feel seen, heard, and safe
– Advocating for equity and safety as essential steps in preventing domestic and sexual violence

This Pride Month, Let’s Take Action
Let’s celebrate Pride by working toward a world where everyone can live authentically — exercising their rights to make choices, set boundaries, and give or withhold consent freely, safely, and without fear.
