The Connection Between Mental Health and Survivor Services
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues and promoting the importance of mental well-being. At Safe+Sound Somerset, we understand that mental health is deeply intertwined with the experiences of survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Recognizing this connection is crucial in providing comprehensive and compassionate support to those who have endured trauma.
Survivors of domestic and sexual violence often face profound emotional and psychological challenges. Trauma can manifest in various ways, including shock, fear, anxiety, confusion, and withdrawal. These immediate reactions are just the beginning; the long-term effects of trauma can touch all areas of a survivor’s well-being—physical, social, and emotional. Research shows that survivors may be at a higher risk for mental health concerns such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, self-harm, and substance misuse. And, there are high rates of domestic and sexual violence survivors in mental health and substance use treatment programs.
Creating a Supportive, Trauma-Responsive Environment
At Safe+Sound Somerset, we believe in the power of trauma-responsive care. Our services cater to the unique needs of survivors, helping them navigate their path towards healing. Through our evidence-based treatments like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), we reduce PTSD symptoms and support survivors in reclaiming their sense of safety and control.
This commitment to trauma-informed spaces extends beyond our clinical services to our entire organization, creating a safe space and promoting healing and empowerment for survivors. Our approach involves understanding the widespread impact of trauma, recognizing its signs and symptoms, and actively integrating this knowledge into our policies, procedures, and practices. By centering trauma-informed strategies at the heart of our organization, Safe+Sound Somerset prioritizes survivors’ experiences and needs, fostering an environment where healing can truly begin.
